Harry's Ridge

Date: July 1, 2007
Distance: 7.8 miles
Elevation Gain: 800 ft
Time: 2 hours 45 minutes
Difficulty: Moderate
Weather: Perfect, although there was a cloud hanging over the mountain all day.
Maps: Mt. St. Helens Recreational Trail Map
My Route:
Boundary Trail (#1) East from the Johnston Ridge Observatory.
Right on Trail #208 (AKA #1E, AKA Harry's Ridge Trail.)
Turn around at the view point near the old monitoring equipment.
Notes:
This was a pretty easy hike, only considered moderate because of the distance. There is no real elevation gain, just mild ups and downs.

Along the way were spectacular views of Spirit Lake, Mount Adams and of course St. Helens and the remnants of the blast. A pesky cloud was parking in the crater for the duration of my hike.

Saint Helens Crater as seen from the visitor's center, featuring: a cloud.

Boundary Trail along Johnston Ridge. The park ranger asked me if I was afraid of heights before recommending this hike to me.

Much of the hike is rocky and eerily plant-less. It's been nearly 30 years since the eruption and places like Johnston Ridge and Harry's Ridge are largely vegetation free and looking toward the crater is like looking at the moon! Its such a foreign terrain. On the sheltered sides of the ridges grasses and flowers are making a come back. Trees are completely missing so there is no shade on this hike.

This hike starts at the Johnston Ridge Observatory on Mount Saint Helens.
