Hummocks Trail

Date: August 15, 2009
Distance: 1.8 miles
Elevation Gain: none
Time: 40 minutes
Difficulty: Easy
Weather: Cool and overcast
Maps: Mt. St. Helens Recreational Trail Map
My Route:
Starting at the Hummocks Trail head, we followed the left-hand trail to the junction with the Boundary trail, then turned around. The walk can also be done as an easy 2.5 mile loop.
Notes:
After a long hard day volunteering with WTA to repair the boundary trail a few miles from here, we were worn out and tired. This quick little walk was a nice way to mellow out and loosen up before the long drive back to the Portland area.

The overcast sky kept St Helens hidden from our view for the whole of the walk.

Hummock and a pond

Several informational signs explain the hummock geology of the area. Hummocks are lots of little hills all together, often formed from debris avalanches from volcanoes, as in this case, or from glacier flows.
